Residents thrilled with upgrades to shared space

It’s important to us at Mount Green that we’re able to not just listen to residents but turn their feedback into action.

We recently were able to use our Community Improvement Fund to make some changes at the shared resident’s lounge at Beecholme, an independent living scheme in Banstead.

The Community Improvement Fund helps to pay for any changes to schemes that fall outside standard maintenance requests and supports projects that benefit entire communities.

Housing Services Manager, Christine, ran a resident consultation event in Autumn 2025 to see what changes everyone wanted made to the space. It was decided that, after several engaging discussions, new sofas and chairs, as well as a fresh coat of paint, were the main priorities.

Residents were involved in the entire process, helping to choose the paint colour and what type of sofas they’d like. We made sure that everyone’s voice was heard, even residents who weren’t as forthcoming with their opinions, so that the new space reflected everyone’s wishes.

Jane Lawmon, a Beecholme resident, said: “I am thrilled with the lounge upgrade, as it has made it more comfortable for us to get together and enjoy tea and coffee and events – it is a beautiful extension to our homes and an upgrade to the quality of space.”

Gareth Hunt, another resident, said: “The upgrade of the furniture and redecoration of the walls in the communal lounge has made the space more welcoming for meeting up together, which has improved the ambience of Beecholme.”

A new bookshelf was also acquired so residents would have plenty of space to store their books and games, encouraging people to socialise and spend time together.

Christine Wytiahlowsky, Housing Services Manager, said: “I’m pleased that the changes to the lounge at Beecholme have been so well received. It’s been a lengthy process as I wanted to make sure that every single resident had the chance to share their views about the upgrades, so it’s really encouraging to hear all the positive feedback.

“This project is a great example of how our Community Improvement Fund can be used to tailor a space in line with residents’ wishes and our partnership with Stonewater means that now we have access to even more support like this so we can respond to as many resident requests as possible.”

Looking ahead, Mount Green hopes to be able to secure more budget to upgrade other aspects of the shared space.
