Mount Green Housing Association is celebrating after one of its colleagues has been announced as a finalist in this year’s Chartered Institute of Housing and Inside Housing’s Housing Heroes Awards.
Janice Barton has been shortlisted in the inspirational colleague of the year category, following a record number of entries for the awards this year.
Since joining the team as a welfare benefit officer two years ago, Janice has gone far beyond her job description, ensuring she finds the very best solution for every resident’s circumstances.
Helping those impacted by alcohol abuse to poor mental health, Janice has been a shining light for many Mount Green residents who have struggled over the last year.
One Mount Green resident said: “Janice came into my life when I thought there was no way out. I never thought I’d be in a good place again, but she listened without judgement and for this, I will be forever grateful to her.”
Although much of Janice’s time has been dedicated to putting others before herself, whether that’s at home, raising her children single-handedly, or at work doing what she can to uplift Mount Green’s residents, Janice is nothing but modest about all that she’s achieved.
She said: “I feel like I have the best job in the world. Everything I do is about helping other people and I love that. I love being able to support our residents to overcome whatever life’s thrown at them and help them back onto their feet. In so many cases, particularly over the last year, the people I work with have never claimed benefits and have no idea where to start.
“Our whole team is committed to getting the best outcome for every person or family we support. Many of us have lived through experiences we wouldn’t wish on anyone but know exactly what it’s like to feel like there’s no light at the end of the tunnel, and no escape. This job allows me to offer to others what I didn’t always have, and I honestly couldn’t imagine myself ever doing anything else.”
Bill Flood, chief executive at Mount Green, said: “For Janice to be recognised for her amazing work at Mount Green and with our residents, is so well-deserved. As chief executive it can be all too easy to lose sight of the inspirational things staff do every day for residents, but in leading a smaller housing association I am privileged to be able to see for myself the real different Janice and her colleagues make to our resident’s lives and welfare. I wish her all the very best at the awards.”
